Not bringing peace
Not bringing peace
Luke 12:51-53 (Jesus speaking)
51Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
If Jesus is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6) then how come he's saying he didn't come to bring peace? Why would Jesus come to cause fighting among family members?

Re: Not bringing peace
Yes, this looks like it directly contradicts Is 9:6 'Prince of Peace', but if you look over in Matt 10:34-39 we find the answer to this riddle. Jesus tells us that by coming to earth, conflict will happen. It will be between the children of God and the children of the devil. Both can even be in the same house. Brother against sister...
If we look deeply into verses 37-39 we discover that Christ wants us to love Him above all others. In that way we are sure to be on the 'winning side' in the conflict.
The conflict is already here. We can watch the news ans see the divisions in the family. We see when those who love God are persecuted by those who do not. Children killing their own parents, parents killing their own children. The closer we come to the time of our Lords return the more of this we will see. It is not Jesus who delivers the conflict, it is the enemy who cannot stand for Christ to overcome. Jesus was the catalyst.

true for me
Yes, Matthew 10:37 is especially true for me, as my parents are not yet saved (though I keep praying for them).
37"Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me"
But I am glad that Jesus brought this conflict, to set truth against lies, righteousness against depravity, purity against sin! My interpretation of the verse is that although Jesus did not come to bring peace on earth, when the earth passes away, we will spend a peaceful eternity with Him in heaven. Joy! I can't wait for the day! My life is certainly full of conflict right now......

Re: Not bringing peace
Each and everyone of us has conflict in our lives, even if it's only in how to best serve the Lord.
