Actually Dueling Banjos was written long before the movie.
The piece was arranged and performed for the movie for guitar and banjo by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandel and was on the movie's soundtrack album. The piece was originally composed by Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith and Don Reno as a duel between a 5-string banjo and a tenor banjo entitled Feuding Banjos in 1955.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I would be nice if I could find the original 1955 version to hear and I found one site but was restricted to USA only.
